CANCER (C00-D48)

Cancer (C00-D48) was the underlying cause of one in five deaths (524 or 21.2%) of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons, with a rate ratio of 1.5 deaths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians for every death of a non-Indigenous person (260.4 per 100,000 compared with 169.9 deaths per 100,000 respectively).

Trachea, bronchus and lung cancers (C33-C34) were the third leading cause of death of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians in 2012, with 138 deaths. The sex ratio for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians who died from Trachea, bronchus and lung cancers (C33-C34) in 2012 was 126 males per 100 females. Deaths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians from Trachea, bronchus and lung cancers occurred at more than twice the rate for non-Indigenous Australians (72.6 per 100,000 compared to 32.0 per 100,000, rate ratio 2.3).
